The real thing
This week there’s lots to be thrilled by….
Did you see Sally Wainwright’s new series Riot Women on BBC 1? Yes menopausal women who decide to start a punk band. And guess what - that’s what the inspirational Ruth Miller did in Leicester with her Unglamorous Project, she encouraged older women to become punk musicians and they have. Sadly Ruth died but the collective lives on - now called Riotous Collective. And one of our members,
is very much part of it. What’s more they’re having a festival. ‘Are you ready Leicester? It’s time to RIOT!
4 days. 4 venues. 25 bands. 90 musicians.
Lineups and tickets for RIOT FEST are here: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/.../riot-fest-2025/e-vzbjdx’
The TV show
In Portland, they were so outraged by Trump sending in the National Guard to deal with protests that they took to their streets naked and on bikes to say No, No, No. We concur and admire your attitude.
There was a piece in the Washington Post talking about the implications of grandparents being older these days. The trend, that is. And so we had a discussion about it. Funnily enough, we don’t discuss being grandparents much because a lot of us are not and because we don’t see ourselves being defined in that way. But there was lots of interesting comments including one member who says she’s 73 and can’t do all the looking after things because her mobility isn’t that great but ‘so what’, she focuses on the simple things like counting buttons with them. That’s the way to go. I too am an older grandmother and am aware of it in terms of how many years I may have left to be one, but of course I’m enjoying the days as much as I can with my two year old grandson.
Saunas popping up everywhere. And of course, our members are going, have noticed, are in favour. Even my tennis club is having a pop up one this winter. A member in Bridport claims that they were well ahead of the game and there’s been a sauna down there for years. Someone was going to a day rave in East London with a sauna. And the Bridport member had a lot of positive health claims in terms of going. Of course, that’s why the Finnish do it and why the British are now catching on.
The Posh Club are creating some innovative ideas for people Over 60. In this case, collaborative cabaret in Stoke Newington. Sounds fantastic. What an opportunity to go wild in the city.
6. And last but not least - the brilliant Vinyl Sisters play at the Brixton Ritzy upstairs every third Wednesday of the month and it’s free.
