AofA's Hot To Trot Talking Points
Every Friday
Yes, every Friday there is a concoction, a cauldron of our hit posts during the week on FB. And this week, they coast from attitudes to death to Ageism is Not in Style’s new campaign which is very us to Bruce Springsteen.
This is great to hear from Sharon Stone who is a star on the pro-ageing front. I keep meaning to start a daily gratitude practice as it seems so important to say thank you as we get older.
Positive News reported on research that shows that cognitive decline doesn’t always come with age. I think it’s so important not to assume that our memories get worse because we get older. Let us not push ourselves down that hole.
‘In a rebuff to old age stereotypes, researchers at Yale University, US, found that some people’s cognitive ability improves in later life
Great news. Bruce Spingsteen has put out a version of A Rainy Night in Soho - it came out this week - as a tribute to the late great Pogues frontman, Shane MacGowan. I used to see Shane during the 80s shopping at Boots - not sure what he was buying but we used to have a chat. I reviewed the Pogues for Sounds a few times over the years.
WeWeed is a nation-wide network of women gardeners who can offer support to women with gardens that they can no long manage as well as some companionship along the way.
‘On International Women’s Day, external Wood said: “We know women have been underrepresented in trades for a long time, there are lots of trades’ directories out there but they are very male-led.
“What I found was that there’s a huge need out there for women gardeners to work with older people who just can’t manage their gardens anymore.”
So Wood and Hutchinson set up WeWeed, not just for gardeners in general, but also female gardeners who could offer companionship.
The company is a network that connects women across England and aims to support them entering the industry.’
Ageism Is Never In Style - find them on Insta - have been doing pro-ageing campaigns very effectively and they were the winners of our AofA Pro-Ageing Organisation in 2023. They have now launched a campaign to reclaim words like crone and old - something AofA has been pursuing from the start. Good on them.
We love Billy Connolly and his attitude towards his Parkinson’s, always adapting to what his new situation is. And now he’s talking about laughing his way towards death. Why not? We can all get a bit too serious around death and dying….
